Understanding Meta Keywords

Meta keywords are a type of metadata that are used to provide search engines with information about the content of a web page. They are a way for website owners to tell search engines what keywords or phrases are relevant to their content. While meta keywords were once an important factor in search engine optimization (SEO), their importance has diminished over the years.

Meta keywords are placed within the HTML code of a web page, specifically in the meta tags. They are included in the head section of a webpage and are not visible to visitors when they are viewing the page. Instead, they are intended for search engines to read and understand the content of the page. The meta keywords tag looks like this: <meta name=”keywords” content=”keyword1, keyword2, keyword3″>.

While meta keywords were once a vital part of SEO, their significance has decreased due to abuse by webmasters who would stuff their meta keywords tag with irrelevant keywords in an attempt to manipulate search engine rankings. As a result, search engines such as Google no longer use meta keywords as a ranking factor in their algorithms. Instead, search engines now rely on the actual content of a web page to determine its relevance to a search query. Despite this, some website owners still choose to include meta keywords as a way to provide additional information to search engines about the content of their pages.
